Conductor and Music Director - James D. McRae
James McRae has been the music director and principal conductor of the Charlotte Community Band since its founding in January 2013. In his tenure as director he has led the band in concerts in the Charlotte community, conducted the North American debut of a piece by Spanish composer Pedro Tort Blasco, organized collaborative concerts with the Cereal City Concert Band of Battle Creek, the DeWitt Community Concert Band, the Grand Ledge Community Band, the Olivet College Wind Ensemble, the Maple Valley High School Choirs, and the Charlotte First Congregational UCC Chorus; and built relationships with guest clinicians from local schools and colleges. In February 2015 McRae directed the band at the 20th Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands in Okemos, Michigan.
McRae is a 2011 graduate of Albion College and a 2007 graduate of Charlotte High School, where he played clarinet in the band program under Dr. Gary Sullivan. McRae played in the Albion College marching and symphonic bands under Dr. Samuel McIlhagga and has also played with the Marshall Rotary Band and the Lansing Concert Band. McRae is a member of the Phi Mu Alpha national music fraternity and is an honorary member of the Kappa Kappa Psi honorary fraternity for bands. McRae teaches social studies at Saranac Jr/Sr High School in Saranac, MI.
